
UPSC Civil Services Recruitment Examination 2025
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Dholpur House, New Delhi will conduct the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2025 on 25th May 2025, for the recruitment of candidates to various Government positions including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Group 'A' and Group 'B' Central Services/Posts. Eligibility for UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025
Vacancies and Age Limit
- Indian Civil Services 2025 Posts: 979 vacancies (PH-38) across various Administrative Services.
- Age: Candidates must be between 21 and 32 years of age as of 01/08/2025. Age relaxations are applicable for SC/ST/OBC and other specified categories.
Educational Qualification and Physical Standards
- Educational Qualification: A degree from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification.
- Physical Standards: Candidates must meet the physical fitness standards outlined in the official notification.
Number of Attempts
- Maximum number of permissible attempts for various categories:
- General Category: Six (6)
- Physical Handicapped: Nine (9) (No limit if SC/ST)
- OBC: Nine (9)
- SC/ST: No Limit

Examination Pattern
The Civil Service examination has two stages:
- Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective Type) - to select candidates for the Main Examination (scheduled for 25th May 2025).
- Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) - to select candidates for the various Services and posts (scheduled for November 2025).
Preliminary Examination 2025
The Preliminary Examination (on 25th May 2025) will consist of two objective-type papers with a maximum of 400 marks. It serves as a screening test with minimum qualifying marks of 33%. The question papers will be in both Hindi and English. There will be negative marking for incorrect answers.
Main Examination 2025
The Main Examination 2025 will have a written exam and an interview. The written exam will include 9 conventional essay-type papers. Two of these papers will be qualifying in nature. Marks from the compulsory papers (Paper-I to Paper-VII) and the Personality Test will be used for ranking.
Candidates meeting the minimum qualifying marks in the written exam will be called for the Personality Test. Approximately twice the number of vacancies will be called for the interview, which carries 275 marks with no minimum qualifying marks. The final ranking will be based on the total marks from the Main Examination (written and interview), with allotments to services based on rank and preferences.
Papers in Mains
The Mains examination includes:
- Paper-A: (One of the Indian languages) - 300 Marks
- Paper-B: English - 300 Marks
Papers counted for merit:
- Paper-I: Essay - 250 Marks
- Paper-II: General Studies-I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society) - 250 Marks
- Paper-III: General Studies -II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations) - 250 Marks
- Paper-IV: General Studies (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) - 250 Marks
- Paper-V General Studies -IV (Ethics, Integrity and Ethics) - 250 Marks
- Paper-VI: Optional Subject - Paper 1 - 250 Marks
- Paper-VII: Optional Subject - Paper 2 - 250 Marks
Sub Total (Written test): 1750 Marks
Personality Test: 275 Marks
Grand Total: 2025 Marks
Candidates can choose an optional subject from the official list.
Online Application for UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025
Candidates must apply online via https://upsconline.gov.in between 22/01/2025 and 11/02/2025 for the UPSC Civil Services Recruitment Examination 2025. Applicants are advised to submit their applications early with all required documents uploaded.
Application Fee
The application fee is ₹100/- (No fee for Female/ SC/ST/PH candidates), payable through net banking or by credit/debit card.
